Hugo Chavez May Banish Toyota from Venezuela

Hugo Chavez, the guy Venezuela loves (if they know what’s good for them) and the US hates (or are supposed to) may literally kick Toyota models out of the country. This snap decision by the dictator president comes on the heels of Toyota refusing (according to Chavez) to build a replacement to the Land Cruiser 4×4 in Venezuela. “Chavez believes the all-terrain vehicle is critical for providing transportation in less-developed parts of the country” according to one source.

Toyota replied by stating they already sent a request to Chavez in order to import updated Land Cruisers. Apparently, Venezuela’s government has not yet ruled on the import license application. Chavez, believing that his government must force Toyota to produce “rustic” models, he said, “And if they don’t, then they should leave and we’ll bring another company in. The Chinese want to come and they make ‘rustic’ models,” according to reports. If Toyota was kicked out, Chavez could authorize the confiscation of Toyota factories in Venezuela, possibly using the facilities to create a new national automaker.
